What is a VEEG test?
Video electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, also known as a VEEG test, is a diagnostic test used to record and evaluate the electrical activity in the brain while simultaneously recording a video of what a patient is doing at the same time. The test is used to examine the relationship between a patient’s brain activity during a seizure or spell (using the EEG data) and what the patient is actually doing in real-time (using the video recording). From this data, doctors are able to identify if the episode is related to the electrical activity in the brain, which would be an epilepsy seizure. A video-EEG test is considered the gold standard in diagnostic testing for nonepileptic seizures.
Why is VEEG testing performed?
Your doctor may recommend a VEEG test in order to diagnose episodic events that may include one or more of the following:
- Fainting or blackout spells
- Behavior problems
What do the results of a VEEG test show?
Results of video-EEG monitoring can help your doctor to:
- Determine the frequency of your seizures
- Determine the type of seizures you are experiencing
- Pinpoint the region of the brain where the seizures begin
- Diagnose epilepsy or nonepileptic seizures
- Guide treatment for seizures
What does video-EEG monitoring involve?
During a video-EEG test, special sensors called electrodes will be attached to the patient. This enables doctors to record and observe brainwave activity over an extended period of time, including while a seizure or spell is occurring. In addition, a camera will be set up to observe the patient during the test. The EEG and recorded behavior are displayed simultaneously, allowing for a point-to-point correlation of recorded events and any accompanying brain activity changes.
In some cases, a patient may be monitored on-site (at the sleep lab) by EEG and video over a number of hours in one day. In-lab testing is often recommended for patients with seizures that occur more frequently, occur at specific times of day, or occur due to specific triggers. Other times, at-home video-EEG monitoring may be an option, wherein the patient brings home the necessary video and monitoring equipment. At-home testing may be advantageous for recording a patient’s activity and seizures during their routine daily activities and during sleep.
What are the advantages of undergoing video-EEG monitoring?
Undergoing VEEG testing at eos sleep diagnostics can provide the following benefits:
- Helps determine the type of seizures you are experiencing
- Can pinpoint the region of the brain where the seizures begin
- Can lead to the correct diagnosis of your symptoms and guide proper treatment
- Allows all stages of sleep to be recorded, when many seizures take place
