What is polysomnography?
Polysomnography, also known as PSG or a sleep study, is a test that is routinely used to confirm or rule out sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia, and many other sleep disorders. The test includes 15-16 channels of polygraphic recordings, which measure your brain’s activity, oxygen levels, and other important bodily functions while you sleep. It is most often used to diagnose certain sleep disorders, but it can also be used to help your doctor adjust your current sleep disorder treatment plan.
In most cases, sleep studies are performed in a hospital setting or at a private sleep lab facility, such as eos sleep diagnostics in New York City. In order to record your body’s normal functions during sleep, a sleep study test is often done during an overnight stay for the entirety of your regular sleep time. Patients will be asked to arrive at the sleep lab during evening hours and stay until the morning. For some patients, an at-home sleep test or daytime sleep test may be used as an alternative to the standard in-lab, nighttime polysomnography test.
What does a sleep study record?
A sleep study test may be used to monitor and record the following body functions during your sleep:
- Breathing patterns
- Oxygen levels
- Heart rate
- Blood pressure
- Eye movements
- Brain waves
- Body movements
- Speaking or noises
Why is a sleep study test performed?
Polysomnography testing monitors the stages of your sleep as well as your sleep cycle patterns to determine whether your sleep is being disrupted, when the disruption occurs, and why.
A sleep study may be performed to identify / diagnose a number of sleep conditions, including:
Your doctor may recommend a sleep apnea sleep study if you suffer from any of the following signs and symptoms of sleep apnea:
- Loud gasping or snorting sounds during the night
- Sudden awakenings during the night
- Morning headaches
- Daytime sleepiness
- Mood swings / irritability

What does an overnight sleep study involve?
On the evening of your sleep lab study, you will arrive at our state-of-the-art sleep lab in NYC and check in at the front desk. You should bring an overnight bag with any items you will need for your regular nighttime routine, including your pajamas and clothing for the next day.
You will be shown to your private room shortly after your arrival, which is very similar to a luxury hotel room. Each room at our facility features an en suite bathroom with shower, high-quality linens, wireless internet, flat screen TV and cable television.
For accurate monitoring of your sleep behavior, each room in the sleep lab is also equipped with a video camera and audio system, which allows your polysomnography technologist to speak with you and monitor you when needed.
After you are ready for bed, one of our technologists will assist you in placing small sensors on your head, chest, and legs. These sensors are connected to a computer that will measure data about your body functions during your sleep. The sensors are small and their wires are long enough to allow normal movement during your sleep. Once the sensors are in place, you can relax and go to sleep as normal.
The next morning, you can immediately return to work and your normal routine. You should allow at least two weeks to receive your test results. A follow-up appointment is usually held once the results are available in order to go over the test data.
Can I undergo a sleep study at home?
A sleep analysis is usually performed overnight at eos sleep diagnostics’ sleep lab. However, we also offer a home sleep study that allows our patients to undergo a high-quality sleep test from the comfort of their own home. Learn more about the test and whether you may be a candidate by visiting our home sleep study page.
