What is a pre surgical/preoperative sleep study?

A pre surgical sleep study is an overnight study performed to detect sleep apnea—a serious sleep disorder that causes a person to have a lapse in breathing during the night. Because sleep apnea can cause serious complications during a surgical procedure or during recovery, your doctor may recommend undergoing a pre surgical sleep study before your procedure. If detected, sleep apnea can be treated with a CPAP or CPAP alternative treatment before you undergo surgery.

Where can I get a preoperative sleep apnea test?

Sleep studies are commonly performed at a sleep lab inside the sleep disorder wing of a hospital or at a sleep health facility, such as eos sleep diagnostics.

The sleep study is conducted during a regular night’s sleep and requires you to stay overnight at the sleep lab. Most sleep labs are comfortable, private, and very similar to a hotel stay. The test is performed by a sleep specialist and examines your breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and other vital body functions throughout the course of the night.

Do I need to have a sleep apnea screening before surgery?

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that causes a person to stop breathing for a period of time during sleep. These breathing interruptions can occur hundreds of times throughout the night without a person realizing. Specialists estimate that sleep apnea is much more common than realized because it often goes undiagnosed. Because of this, it is especially important to undergo a sleep study—especially if you are undergoing a surgical procedure which can increase your risk of breathing complications.

Your doctor may recommend pre op testing for sleep apnea if you have a history of sleep disorders or have any of the below symptoms of sleep apnea:

  • Snoring
  • Loud gasps in the middle of the night
  • Morning headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Trouble focusing during daytime hours
  • Feeling unrested, even after a full night’s sleep
  • Constant waking throughout the night
  • Memory problems

What does a pre surgical testing for sleep apnea involve?

A pre surgical sleep study is done at eos sleep diagnostics‘ sleep center in advance of your surgery date. You will arrive to the sleep lab on the evening of your sleep study and you can bring any items you need for your normal bedtime routine.

When you arrive to eos sleep diagnostics for testing, you will check in to your hotel-like room, which has complete privacy with your own shower, bed, and flat-screen TV. There, you can change into your pajamas and go through your regular nightly routine in privacy. Before bed, one of our technicians will join you to assist you with the sleep study technology. Your technician will help you to place small sensors on your head, chest, and legs, which are connected to a computer. This will gather information about your body functions during your sleep. Once the test is set up, you can go to sleep as normal and will sleep through the entire night at the facility.

For accurate monitoring of your sleep behavior, your sleep lab room is usually equipped with video and audio systems. This allows your sleep lab technician to monitor your movements and safety throughout the night. It also allows you to speak with your technician as needed.

In the morning, you will be assisted in removing the sensors and can continue your normal daily routine. Results of your sleep study usually take at least two weeks, after which your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment to go through the results with you.

What are the advantages of undergoing a pre surgical sleep study?

Undergoing a preoperative sleep apnea study may result in the following benefits:

  • Helps accurately diagnose sleep apnea
  • Reduces the risk of respiratory complications during or after surgery
  • Provides important information about your breathing and body functions during sleep
  • Done in a private and comfortable hotel-like setting
