What is a CPAP / BIPAP titration study?
Titration studies are sometimes recommended for patients who have sleep-related breathing problems that have been confirmed by an overnight sleep study. A CPAP titration study uses the same elements as a routine polysomnography, with the addition of CPAP (or continuous positive airway pressure) or BIPAP / BPAP (bi-level positive airway pressure). This means that during the patient’s sleep, a special machine supplies varying levels of pressurized air. The nasal CPAP and BPAP pressures are adjusted throughout the night to determine the appropriate pressure(s) to be prescribed for your sleep apnea treatment.
PAP Nap Study
A similar test called a PAP nap study is sometimes also performed during a shorter, daytime test. The PAP nap study was designed to help patients get acclimated to CPAP therapy. This can help improve the patient’s CPAP compliance long-term by providing one-on-one education, monitored use, and guidance from an experienced respiratory sleep therapist / sleep technician.
Why is a CPAP / BIPAP titration study used?
Your doctor may recommend having a CPAP titration test at eos sleep diagnostics if you have already taken a sleep study and your doctor would like more information about your condition, or if you are suffering from any of the following signs and symptoms of sleep apnea:
- Loud gasping or snorting sounds during the night
- Sudden awakenings during the night
- Morning headaches
- Daytime sleepiness
- Mood swings/irritability
- Lowered daytime focus
- Decreased libido
- Memory loss
What does a CPAP / BIPAP titration study involve?
Titration studies are performed at a professional sleep lab, such as eos sleep diagnostics. Commonly, a sleep apnea titration test is done at the same time as an overnight sleep study, which is known as a split-night study. You may bring your regular sleep clothes as well as anything you may need for your regular bedtime routine.
At eos sleep diagnostics, your overnight sleep lab room is similar to a luxury hotel room, with a private bedroom, bathroom, and flat-screen TV. It is also equipped with video and audio monitoring, so your technician will be able to observe any sleep behaviors and you will be able to communicate with the technician as needed.
After checking in and settling into your room, you can get ready for bed and go through your usual nightly routine, including relaxing and watching TV. Once you are ready, your sleep technician will assist you in getting ready for the study. After your device is set up, you can go to sleep as normal and sleep through the entire night. In the morning, you can wake up, shower and get ready as usual, and return to work and your regular activities.
Your test results from the sleep lab testing are usually available in about two weeks, after which your doctor will meet with you for a follow-up visit to go over the results and your treatment options.
